Why Google consents to pay $5bn consumer privacy lawsuit

Google is settling a $5 billion consumer privacy lawsuit that accuses the company of secretly tracking Chrome users while they were browsing the web in incognito mode.

The lawsuit claims that Google violated federal wiretapping and California privacy laws by collecting information about what people view online and where they browse, regardless of whether they click on Google-supported ads.

Google denies any wrongdoing and says that it clearly states each time users open a new incognito tab that websites might be able to collect information about their browsing activity. The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed yet.
