Why TikTok plans to unveil online election centres

TikTok has said it will launch online election centres as part of its efforts to counter misinformation and support electoral integrity during the elections in 2024.

OpporTechies gathered that these centres aim to direct users to trusted information and will be introduced in more than 50 countries where elections are expected to take place this year(2024).

For instance, in the UK, TikTok will launch a Local Election Centre in early April, ahead of the local elections in May, created in partnership with the fact-checking firm Logically Facts.

The platform will also produce educational videos to encourage users to consider the information they consume around elections. These videos will be featured on the election centre. TikTok has also pledged, along with 20 other leading tech companies, to help prevent deceptive AI content from interfering with this year’s elections through proactive collaboration.

Partners in TikTok electoral integrity project

OpporTechies learnt that TikTok is not doing this all alone. TikTok is partnering with several organizations to support its election integrity initiative. These partnerships include collaborations with:

Fact-Checking Organizations: TikTok works with International Fact-Checking Network-accredited organizations such as Agence France-Presse (AFP), Animal Político, dpa Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Estadão Verifica, Lead Stories, Newtral, Facta, PolitiFact, Science Feedback, and Teyit & Vishvas News.

Electoral Commissions: The platform partners with electoral commissions around the world to build in-app election hubs that showcase relevant information to potential voters.

Other Partnerships: For specific initiatives like the “Elections Center,” TikTok has partnered with organizations such as the Center for Democracy in Deaf America, the Federal Voting Assistance Program, Campus Vote Project, and Restore Your Vote.

These collaborations aim to limit the spread of misinformation and provide users with accurate and authoritative information during elections.
