Emigration has become a growing trend in Nigeria and even other countries. Little wonder, it has been nicknamed “japa”, which is Yoruba (a language spoken by the Yoruba ethnic group in the western part of Nigeria) word which means “flee” when translated in English.
In order to japa, many have had to switch to careers that guarantee ease of emigration. Prominent among professions which rank high in most developed countries are healthcare workers and tech professionals.
Although this is true, there are also opportunities for lecturers.
OpporTechies gathered from a globetrotter known as TobyWrites on X some useful advice that could aid your japa plans.
He said: “People focus a lot on nurses & doctors when it comes to ease of relocation. Yeah, there’s a huge gap in those sectors in US, Canada & UK.…but there’s one profession people are not looking at & it is “Lecturing”.
A lot of universities sponsor. If you’re a lecturer and want to relocate, repackage your CV, and apply aggressively to US and UK universities.
Better chances if you’re an Associate Professor. Tour all the university websites in these countries and apply.Good thing is that as you’re lecturing, you can be chasing your PhD or if you have that already, you’d be working your way to being a Professor, earning like £60k per annum. Not bad money.Ire o✌🏽.”
Reacting to his post, a netizen known as Tio said: “Professors earn 60k??? No wonder people are not going into academics.”
Responding to Tio’s concerns, TobyWrites replied: ‘I didn’t say professors earn £60k per annum, I said “you’d be working your way to being a professor,” more like you’re an Associate Professor and that’s usually their salary range.
Frame 1 is a UK university advert for an Associate Professor, and usually they start from the lower salary range which is £57k.
In this case Frame 2 is for a lecturer which starts from like £38kThe good thing about these jobs is that you can be chasing your PhD or Professorship as you’re lecturing, hence, steady career growth is almost inevitable except you have other plans.’
